Ok Oppo, Which manufacturer's lineup does absolutely nothing for you?

A manufacturer or brand where there’s not a single vehicle that appeals to you based on their 2018 lineup?

It has to be Nissan for me. The GT-R is the only saving grace but it’s getting long in the tooth and is no longer the hypercar-killing entry level supercar it used to be. Nissan and even Infiniti is all beige mobiles, completely dead to me.

Kinja'd!!!

Subaru is the other one. Nothing in their lineup is interesting to me and that includes the Wrx/Sti and the BRZ. Sure, if I had kids and wanted a solid safe high resale AWD people mover I would be interested in a 3.6R Outback but now, bleh.

Even the kings of beige Toyota has interesting trucks like the Tacoma and 4runner, and the new V6 Camry is actually a good car despite the looks.

Hell, even Chrysler with just 2 vehicles has a good minivan and I like the 300.

So, which one do you love to hate?

Probably Mitsubishi? I mean, I actually had a soft spot for the Mirage, but then I drove it. It needs a different engine. S wap in the 101-hp mill from the Fiat 500 and it’d instantly be improved.

Volkswagen. Ive driven the Scirrocco, the GTI (mk5, 6 and 7), driven a Passat CC, theres just zero emotion for the brand. From the fake fart noises when shifting gears to the ‘premium’ feel, nothing.

Disclaimer: Ive driven a shitload of VW products, way more than Ive listed, but it would take a day and a halve to list them all here. Theyre all bland.

Kia stinger, you can only get AWD in Canada. Also I still desire a manual transmission in my fun car.

If I was in the market for a rwd performance car I’d go mustang GT or GT350/350R every day of the week.

Trucks.... I dunno not my preferred method of transportation. I have driven a Silverado and acknowledge they are nice. I'd have to research it against the F-150

Infiniti. I think Lexus has them soundly beat in the style and comfort department, and damn near everyone has them beat in enthusiastic driving based on the terrible steering feel of the last Infiniti I drove.

Masarati. Snooze. Nice engines, boring exteriors. Why you would pick a Masarati over a comparable Aston is beyond me.

Toyota. The twins do nothing for me (although I love that they exist!). 4runner.... Meh. I’ll take the good looking older gens. Land Cruiser? Ditto. Tacoma... Okay fine the Tacoma is still every bit as great as it’s ever been.

BMW is getting pretty close to taking a spot on the list as well :(

I’ll go through and see what I can think of. Let’s see

Uninterested:

Audi, Acura(sad face), Infiniti, Mazda(all sizzle no pop), Nissan, Mitsubishi, GMC, I guess you could add any high end luxury/super car brand here because I think spending 200,000 plus on a car is stupid. Aston Martin, and Maserati too.

Worth their salt:

VW has the GTI, BMW has the 2 series, Volvo Has a legit wagon, Mercedes also has legit wagon in AMG form no less, Porsche all of them? Fiat the 124,

Honda has Ridgeline and Fit, Toyota the Tacoma, Lexus the LC, Subaru the STI and BRZ,

Ford the F-150, Lincoln Navigator, Dodge Hellkitties, Ram all of them, Jeep Wrangler and Trackhawk, Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Corvette, Buick the Torques, Tesla Id take a 3,

Honda is not on this list because I have driven both the Civic 1.5T and the new and old Accords(2.0t and the older v6) and they seriously THE best cars in their Compact and midsize segment, tied with Mazda 3 and 6 IMO. Also , everything I have seen and read about the Civic Type R is excellent, ignoring the over styling of course.

Acura is dead to me as well. NSX ok fine I give it to them . but until they really make a performance TLX and RLX, meh.I guess their crossovers are good but I don’t care.

Hm, probably PSA passenger vehicles excluding GM era Opels. Modern Peugeots and Citroens just don’t do anything for me. Though the Citroen Space Tourer seems really nice.

Another strong contender is Nissan, especially their European lineup. The Micra is interesting looking but not much more, the Pulsar is so bland it got killed off after just four years on sale, the Juke’s dead just as the Z. Only the Navarra pick up is somewhat competetive.

I guess only Toyota is worse with their uninspired European offerings.

Most German makes. I have trouble telling their models apart, and as a result it’s hard to care about them.

I know a TT or an R8 when I see it , but Audi’s other models all look the same to me. And I can’t get too excited about BMWs - not even their M cars- because the only ones I recognize are the i 8 and the i3. I can’t tell Mercedes apart, except for the SLS, but the AMG GT looks so much like it that it takes me a second to figure out what I’m looking at.

Volvo and Jaguar because beautiful wagons and SUVs that don’t look like warmed over doodie. And the only reason Honda wasn’t on the snooze list is the Ridgeline, which, for some reason that I am hesitant to try to discern, I actually like.

Subaru, used to be a big fan, now nothing.

Nissan, want to like it... but not a thing, without a Z. If I had to buy a new truck, I might look at a new Titan, but I don’t need one, because I have a 2007 Titan that I will probably drive the wheels off of for the foreseeable future.

VW... has nothing I want.

Audi - would like to like... but the R8 is out of range and too clinical now, TT is way too expensive for what it is, and A5 is no longer as the graceful looks it once did.

BMW - without the i8's innovation , and maybe the 2 coupe... nope, nothing... and I don’t have the money for an i8, and there are other cars I would probably buy before a 2-series.

Mercedes - nope, not a thing.

Honda/Acura - nothing.

Hyundai - are you kidding?

Alfa/Fiat - can’t fit in a 124/Miata, so nope.

Mazda, same as Fiat.

Toyota, not with GT86 the way it is, and Supra the way it looks to be.

Lexus - i find most of them irretrievably ugly.

Ford - what’s left? actually maybe would consider a Mustang.

GM - There are some interesting aspects, but also some disqualifying aspects, so probably not. Government ties, mandatory  OwnStar, and remaining big-corporate think that still pervades their planning, decision making, and design cost-cutting decisions, old GM still haunts new GM a bit... and they killed Pontiac, the only part of the company that had real potential with Fiero and what could have evolved from 4th-gen Firebird.

That leaves Porsche, Jaguar, and FCA... since i like my Grand Cherokee and relatives that have a Chrysler 300 and a RAM 1500, maybe Ford Mustang, or Kia Stinger.

Weird... there is a plethora of vehicles out there... but SO many of them are uninteresting.

Acura - 10/10 would daily an NSX

Alfa Romeo - A ny of them

Aston Martin - Don’t like the looks of the DB11 but I’d take a new Vantage or DBS Superleggera

Audi - The RS models are worth their salt

Bentley - Gimme dat Mulsanne

BMW - M2, M3, M5, even the X5 M as a tow rig

Cadillac - CT6, CTS-V

Chevrolet - Corvette, Camaro, Silverado

Dodge - Anything with the 6.4, Hellcat motor or Demon motor

Ferrari - 812, FF

Fiat - 500, 124

Ford - Mustang, F-150, Flex

Genesis - G70 6MT

Honda - Civic Si, Civic Type R, Accord 2.0T   6MT

Hyundai - Veloster N

Infiniti - QX80 because big trucc that looks like a bionic rhino, Q60 RS400 without DAS

Jaguar - F-Type 380 manual, F-Type R, F-Type SVR, XF Sportbrake (if we got it up here), XJ, XJR

Jeep - JK, JL, Trackhawk

Kia - Stinger GT

Lamborghini - All Huracan variants, all Aventador variants (especially an SV J)

Lexus - Everything except the CT and UX (even the new ES is really nice)

Lincoln - Continental, Navigator

Lotus - Yes

Maserati - Now that the lineup’s been refreshed I’d have any of them. Gorgeous GT cars that aren’t as good as AMGs or Astons but make me feel really good. Six-figure car purchases are emotional anyway.

Mazda - All of them, weirdly enough.

McLaren - All of them, no surprise there.

Mercedes - All AMGs (even the 43s, they’re actually fairly brilliant), Maybach

Mini - JCW Hatch is a riot but even the base Cooper is a great drive for the money.

Nissan - Z, GT-R and Frontier Pro-4X 6MT

Porsche - All of them but especially the 911T and Panamera Sport Turismo

Ram - That new 1500 Laramie Longhorn makes me feel some type of way

Rolls-Royce - Wraith and Dawn

Subaru - BRZ, WRX

Toyota - New Corolla is actually decent, 4Runner and Tacoma are awesome, 86 is still pretty good, Camry XSE V6 is surprisingly dope

Volkswagen - Golf R in Teal makes me feel some type of way. Other than that the new Jetta’s pretty good.

Volvo - All of them

What’s not worth it for me:

Buick - Even the Regal GS just doesn’t do much for me

Chrysler - Nuff said

GMC - The Chevy versions are cheaper

Land Rover - The Navigator, XC90, and for fast SUV nutters the Trackhawk are all better solutions

Mitsubishi - Again, n uff said

Smart - with combustion power out there’s nothing keeping me attached to the brand

Tesla - The value just isn’t there in Canada

As for Porsche, Im not that of a purist to claim that what theyre doing to their line-up (Macan, Cayenne, Panamera) is ruining the brand. In fact, the higher trim Macans and Panamera’s (especially the Sport Turismo) are vehicles I love seeing around.

2 friends of mine both have R’s and I would be a fool to deny that the GTI/R platform is brilliant. They handle extremely good, the stories you hear about ‘arriving at the track, going crazy during a track day and driving home at a relaxing pace in the same car’ are absolutely true. Ive only driven the GTI on the track and I found it quite playful at the limit. The R feels much more composed, much more mature. It is noticably faster, from what I could feel, but does that in a way you’d expect a much larger car to do. The GTI really feels like it should, like a hot hatch.

It also sounds louder through the speakers, if thats your thing.

The one thing that I miss most though, and I know its an irrational want, but, stepping away from the VR6 engines , that left a mark. Again, Im well aware that these engines had their fair share of problems and I also know that the 2.0T, in this day and age, is a logical step forward, but the growl of the VR6 engines is just something you can’t replace. I hated you guys for getting the Mk4 with a VR engine (even though the Mk4 sucked in GTI trim).

What is their “performance lineup” currently? The Focus RS and the Mustang?

The Fo ST is a cool car, though not overly “hot” at 250hp and 270 lb/ft and the FiST is like 200hp and I guess it may have a torque rating. I drive a 10 year old Volvo (315hp and 375 lb/ft of torque) that would blow the doors off both of those cars and it is far from a “performance” car. It’s just a warmed up hatch. It also has doors I can get in and out of and a backseat I can fit in.

The Mustang is blah for me. Always has been and always will be. I grew up around them - my uncle was a Mustang fanatic (his 1972 Mach 1 was chartreuse and actually pretty cool) and I spent many miles in 1965 convertible my grandfather drove. My other uncle has a fully restored 1965 convertible now. But they don’t blow my skirt up.

Like I said, I am glad you are happy with your car, that’s what matters most, and I certainly meant no disrespect.

I think your standards for a hot car may be a touch high. My first car was a NA porsche 944 with 168 hp. M y mini cooper S had 180. 250 feels like a damn spaceship, and is well in line with traditional hot hatches. My trans am should have close to 300 but with an extra 1000 lbs and 3 less gears it probably will be slower.

Kinja'd!!! Sovande > My bird IS the word
09/17/2018 at 13:32

Maybe. I don’t know. My El Camino has the World’s Worst Crate Motor the 350/290 which is a mismatch of a giant cam and the worst heads ever made and with the intake, carb, headers and exhaust may make 260? Maybe it makes the claimed 290, but I don’t believe that. It’s nowhere near fast, but it is certainly dramatic.

The Toyota Camry has an advertised 0-60 of 5.7 seconds (so does the Accord) which beats the Focus ST’s advertised time of 6.3 seconds. I don’t know what that means.

My first car was a 1982 Volvo 240 DL with 95hp. 0-60? 14.2 seconds.

And I get that the 0-60 time is not an end-all be-all metric, but it’s one that is easily found.
